"The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen) and Aunt May (Sally Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents' disappearance - leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans), his father's former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors' alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero."

At last, I found my energy to blog again. xD In my first post, I mentioned that I would be re-writing some movie reviews because they were not done correctly. And they were in Tagalog (Philippine language) anyway. Hm, Amazing Spiderman was the first movie I decided to make a review about. If I remember correctly, it was shown here in the Philippines last July 2012 so it's almost 6 months already, practically, I already forgot some of the movie details. xD I just remember how mesmerized I am with Andrew Garfield's handsome face. HAHAHA. Yup, I find him good-looking since I can't help but to compare his features to Tobey Maguire. Anyway I'm not here to compare the degree of their awesome-ness and stuff like that. :P

Review:
Unlike most of the reviews about The Amazing Spiderman that I've come across with, I won't bother comparing this film to the Spiderman film in 2002. I mean, this is a re-make so expect about the similarities, and not complain about them. I personally think that this re-make or rather, re-boot is just appropriate, as if riding the so-called technology era our generation has today - with Peter Parker's (Andrew Garfield) techy-geeky attitude and such.

The films starts with a young Peter Parker, as he discovers his parents' study to be ransacked. His parents take him to stay with his aunt and uncle after securing the documents in the ransacked room. His parents leave, but are killed later on in a plane crash. As a teenager, the story slowly paces, showing Parker being his, teenager self - being bullied by schoolmates and being romantically interested in Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), the daughter of the police captain. At home, Peter discovers his father's documents and learns that he has been working with scientist Dr. Connors (Rhys Ifans) to combine human and animal DNA to cure illness.

Parker breaks into a lab where genetically modified spiders are kept. After one bites him, he discovers during a fight that he has developed superhuman speed, strength, the ability to stick to surfaces, and a heightened sense of danger. Parker as Spider Man is later branded as a vigilante by the police officers when he decides to hunt down the criminal that shot his uncle. He also incidentally helps Dr. Connors complete his serum test, thus allowing him to regrow his missing limb. However, Dr. Connors does not only regrows his missing limb in the process but eventually transforms into a giant lizard who proves to be a danger to humans as he plans to spread the serum he himself uses.

The Amazing Spiderman may not be a perfect film but I seriously think that the movie was quite realizable - from Parker's character, to his home, to his school, his world before he became Spiderman. It's something interesting to learn before we immerse ourselves in the superhero blockbuster of the film's second part. The superhero scenes of every Spiderman movie are really appealing, in my case. xD In this movie, what stood out the most for me was his attempt to reach the Oscorp tower with his injury. In that scene, he was literaly flying with the help of some guys maneuvering the tractors (?) that served as his foothold. It was fantastic and dramatic at the same time. Now I'm wishing that I could have watched it in 3D. :P

I personally think that the film's cast is amazing and it was emotionally engaging. Garfield with lanky physicality and carefully measured emotion, to Stone's strong emotional connection with him. The other casts' portrayal were strong as well such as Capt. Stacy and Parker's Uncle Ben. I also commend the film's action scenes. I think they did a good job with the cinematography - Spiderman moves and fights were greatly conceptualized. The stunts were well-staged especially the flying scenes and Parker's skateboard scene.

What just bothered me was the soundtrack. Not that it was really really important but I think soundtracks add to the impression a film leaves on people. Again, this film is not perfect but I actually appreciate it's effort to present the film as detailed as possible from the story's comic version.
